How Can I Prevent Acne?

Introduction

This Straight, No Chaser answers the simple question “How can I prevent acne?”

prevent acneWhat to Do

You can prevent pimples by keeping your face clean and your hands away from your face. Use any good cleanser or soap to gently wash the affected area two to three times daily. You treat most cases of mild acne with over-the-counter lotions or creams containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. You can also try dietary or herbal products like arnica, zinc, and tea tree oil.

If herbal or over-the-counter products do not work, a doctor may recommend a prescription medicine that can be applied to the skin or taken orally. If you have more than 10 blemishes on one side of your face or they are deep, painful and swollen, you should see a doctor. People over the age of 25 with acne may also need a doctor’s care for acne.

Straight, No Chaser: A Quick Tip for When You're Feeling Bugged…

earbug

Quite a few of you had the same question after Friday’s post on objects in the ears, nose and throat:
What about insects that get in the ear, particularly when you are asleep? It’s pretty horrifying to think of some cockroach or other disgusting thing scratching around that close to your brain! What you don’t want to do is something that will irritate the critter to the point of puncturing your eardrum. Beyond freaking out, your next step should be pretty simple.
At home, consider doing what we do. If you have mineral oil, put a few drops in the ear. It’s the quickest and safest way to kill what’s in there. However, don’t delay coming to the local ER, urgent care facility or your doctor’s office. Any damage caused still needs to be evaluated.

Straight, No Chaser: Learn the Physical Signs of Child Abuse

abuse-emotional-child-96_2

Given how often this topic is in the news, we need an army to protect children against child abuse. I will intermittently be discussing various forms of abuse, but to start with, I’d like to help you recognize physical signs I tend to look for to potentially identify victims of abuse.
Symptoms include:

  • Black eyes

physical_2[1]

  • Broken bones that are unusual and unexplained
  • Bruise marks or lashes shaped like hands, fingers, or objects (such as a belt)

child abuse whip marks arm

  • Bruises in areas where normal childhood activities would not usually result in bruising

BRUISES-MISSED-ABUSE

  • Bite marks

child abuse bite marks

  • Bulging soft spot (fontanelle) or separations in an infant’s skull

childabusefontanelle

  • Burn marks, usually seen on the hands, arms, or buttocks

childabusebuttock

  • Choke marks around the neck
  • Cigarette burns on exposed areas or on the genitals

child abuse burns

  • Circular marks around the wrists or ankles (signs of twisting or tying up)
  • Unexplained unconsciousness in an infant

If you ever see such things in children, be suspicious, be involved and get help. There are always ‘explanations’ for why things happen to children, but they too frequently seem to defy logic. Of course you can call 911 or the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline (1-800-4-A-CHILD). You could save a life.

Can I Use www.SterlingMedicalAdvice.com Instead of Insurance?

health_insurance_premiums

We would not recommend it (especially with the individual mandate in place with the Affordable Care Act), but SterlingMedicalAdvice.com will provide you with the information you need to help avoid the time and costs wasted with unnecessary ER and other healthcare visits. SMA is best viewed as a supplement to the care provided by your physicians that works inside of the costs you are already paying. SMA can save you additional money by empowering you with better knowledge about your health in general and your specific medical circumstances. Even better, ask your employer to consider adding SterlingMedicalAdvice.com as an employee benefit!

From the Health Library of SterlingMedicalAdvice.com: “Does eating yogurt with probiotics help weight loss?”

2probiotics

According to the available medical literature, if you eat yogurt with probiotics before or after you eat, it will break down all the fat you have ingested. This does retard weight gain!

About www.SterlingMedicalAdvice.com: "Why would I need this? I already have insurance!"

gfish

Insurance covers most of the costs of the care you need when you need it. However, did you forget that insurance comes with co-pays and deductibles?

  • Before receiving any insurance benefit, patients pay $1,500 in deductibles on average. The year’s deductible alone is 2½ times the cost of a year’s subscription to SMA.
  • Emergency room (ER) and urgent care facility co-pays average between $50–$150. Patients have an additional responsibility for about 30% of the total cost of the bill (the average ER bill comes to about $1,200/visit; your share comes to about $400). So you’re still paying approximately $500/ER visit, even if you have insurance – and that’s after you’ve exhausted your deductible! Even one ER visit with insurance is more expensive than a year’s subscription to SMA.

One of the main purposes of www.SterlingMedicalAdvice.com is to save you multiple ER visits over the course of a year.
SMA works inside your insurance (included as part of your deductible, for example) to reduce additional yearly expenses. Try us, and experience the difference!

From the Health Library of SterlingMedicalAdvice.com: "Will eating once a day help me lose weight faster?"

one-meal-a-day-250
Is starving yourself the goal? One meal a day is not enough to keep you healthy. Doing this will prompt the body to go into starvation mode and to hold on to body fat. Your metabolism will slow and your lean muscle will be consumed. Honestly, the best way to lose weight is to eat portions that are the size of the palm of your hand, which is the size of your stomach. This is the portion size you should be eating. Also, eat a lot of fruits, as it has fibers that break down fatty acids. Drink six to eight (6–8) glasses of water but not much more then eight (8), as you can actually poison yourself from water. In addition, remember to eat proteins, as it also helps break down fat.

From the Health Library of SterlingMedicalAdvice.com: “Is there really a way to eat what you want and still lose weight?”

calorie table
In all honesty, if you are staying within the daily calorie intake range, then yes, it’s possible. That said, foods that are bad for weight loss cause your blood sugar levels to rise and drop quickly, making you hungry. Of course, if you are craving more food, you are going to take in excessive calories and gain weight. That’s why eating nutritious foods will help you lose the weight and keep it off.

Straight, No Chaser: The Week In Review, Oct. 13, 2013

New Logo

I want to take a moment to thank my readers for support Straight, No Chaser and to inform you of a few new developments. The launch of www.SterlingMedicalAdvice.com occurs on Nov. 1st, 2013; you can actually head there now for a sneak peek. Straight, No Chaser was and is designed to provide a taste of what will be available within SterlingMedicalAdvice.com, which will also feature a Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) databank with thousands of pre-answered questions, as well as personalized, immediate, always available interactions with healthcare professionals on your urgent and non-urgent questions. Additional content is currently available on Google+ and Facebook at SterlingMedicalAdvice.com, and on Twitter @asksterlingmd.

Now to the week in review.

On Monday, we discussed angioedema, a condition often presenting with severe swelling of the lips, tongue and throat. This is to be considered a life-threatening emergency prompting immediate medical attention. The risk of the tongue occluding your airway, resulting in an ability to breathe is real.
On Tuesday, we began a series on breast cancer. The first post introduced Breast Cancer Awareness Month and called for more universal awareness.
On Wednesday, we presented two posts (check here and here) listing various myths regarding breast cancer. I’m encouraged that so many of you are aware that men can develop breast cancer as well as women.
On Thursday, we focused on demographic information and discussed risk factors relating to breast cancer. It’s not just being an older women that places you at risk. You can control certain things, such as alcohol intake and obesity.
On Friday, we began the self-empowerment process, giving you tools to self-assess for breast cancer and providing detailed instructions on how to perform the breast self-exam.
On Saturday, we discussed the actual signs, symptoms and long-term prognosis for breast cancer. There are more symptoms to worry about than just lumps. Also remember: the evidence is very clear that your survival rates directly relate to early detection and evaluation.
On Sunday, we discussed breast cancer treatment options. Although breast cancer is scary and deadly in many cases, be encouraged that nearly 3 million survivors are with us in the U.S.
In the next few weeks, we will continue to blog as well as provide additional information from the www.SterlingMedicalAdvice.com FAQ database and still more information about the new service. Thanks for supporting Straight, No Chaser, and be sure to check us out on the social media sites as well.
